Under Sec 5.2(1)(c) of the ID screening regs of Aeronautics Act:
“An air carrier shall not transport a passenger if the passenger does not appear to be of the gender indicated on the identification he or she presents.”
This means that anyone who is a post-op or non-op trans* person can be turned away from getting on flights in Canada. This is blatant discrimination towards the trans*community. Sign Below and tell Harper that Canadians won’t stand for this type of oppression.
if you guys would all make sure you sign this, that would be great
Not this again. I recall Hullo said something along the lines of how I felt about this. I actually don’t feel its a serious attack meant to put down, or not serve transgenders. Air travel involves a lot of security and identification is required during travel. So this is meant to say you should share the same appearance and gender as your Identification card specifies. I can imagine if youre trying to get a flight to some other country and you look nothing like your ID there would be some serious security complications and they can’t allow you to fly.
There might be some new ID options for transgenders but seriously, I know there’s a lot of gender discrimination but I feel this really isn’t one of them.
Hello! I’m a transgendered person that lives in Canada. You might not feel this is a serious attack on transgendered people, but the wording in the law itself is vague at best and leaves the interpretation of “does not appear to be the gender indicated on the identification…” (source) entirely up to the security officer. That means that the personal bias of the officer can enter the equation, which can justify the harrassment of people who are gender varient, pre-op, or non-op. It can also force a transgendered person to have to out themselves publically, which makes them a target for violence and harassment.
